Supported Protocols

Birch connects to routers using standard control protocols. Many of these protocols are supported across equipment from multiple manufacturers, so the protocol you select in Birch depends on what your router supports — not necessarily who manufactured it.

  • Driver name: bmd
  • Default port: 9990
  • Notes: Ethernet-based protocol with full crosspoint control and real-time status. Port labels are synchronized from the router automatically.
  • Common equipment: Blackmagic Design Smart Videohub, Universal Videohub, Micro Videohub
  • Driver name: probel-sw-p-08
  • Notes: Industry-standard protocol adopted by many router manufacturers. If your router supports SW-P-08 (sometimes referred to as the Probel or Snell protocol), this driver will work regardless of the manufacturer.
  • Common equipment: Probel, Snell, Grass Valley, and various other matrices that implement SW-P-08
  • Driver name: ultrix
  • Default port: 5000
  • Notes: Requires an onboarding wizard after the router is added. Supports AUX ports, multiviewer heads, and variant source generation. See Ultrix Onboarding for details.
  • Common equipment: Ross Video Ultrix FR1, FR5, Carbonite Ultra
  • Driver name: gvg
  • Default port: 12345
  • Notes: Supports large-scale routing matrices with level-based routing.
  • Common equipment: Grass Valley NV9000 series, Ross Video Ultrix
  • Driver name: quartz
  • Notes: Standard crosspoint control for Quartz-protocol routers.
  • Common equipment: Evertz
  • Driver name: lrc
  • Default port: 52116
  • Notes: Protocol support for LRC-compatible equipment.
  • Common equipment: Leitch, Imagine Communications

When adding a router in Birch, you select the driver that matches the control protocol your router speaks. Check your router’s documentation for which protocol it supports.
